The holiday season is here! There are trees to decorate, apple cider to make, presents to wrap, and Christmas light displays to see.

The most magical and beautiful time of the year is upon us. While we are busy preparing our homes for family and friends, it’s important to take time for ourselves. Visiting some of the amazing light displays throughout the 5 boroughs is one way to celebrate the holidays and unwind.

CitySignal breaks down some of the best holiday light displays in our city. Some are world-renowned, while others are a bit more under wraps. Whatever you choose, grab a blanket, some hot chocolate, and your gloves before setting out on your very own tour of NYC holiday light displays.

Dyker Heights

It is impossible to even mention Christmas lights in NYC without mentioning Dyker Heights. This long-celebrating neighborhood in Brooklyn could quite possibly be the best Christmas lights around. Also known as the King of Christmas Lights, The Undisputed Capital of Christmas Pageantry, and Dyker Lights, you will be blown away by the bright lights in this part of New York.

Ms. Lucy Spata created this magical Christmas tradition in the 1980s. Her mother loved to decorate her home for Christmas, and Ms. Spata wanted to keep that memory alive with her home in Dyker Heights. Soon, many neighbors decided to join Ms. Spata in her holiday tradition. Now, the neighborhood is known throughout the world for what Ms. Spata started.

Most families in the neighborhood begin to decorate their homes around Thanksgiving and continue to light up the streets through January. There is no way to know exactly how many lights glow throughout Dyker Heights, but it is estimated to be millions! Some homes are extravagant, while others aspire to be over the top. Whatever you desire in holiday-lighted cheer, you will find it in Dyker Heights.

When and Where to Visit The Dyker Heights Lights

You can view the lights on Dyker Heights Boulevard, also known as 11th to 13th Avenues from 83rd to 86th St in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. Most displays will turn off at 9pm so aim to go sometime before then and after 4pm.

Live In Dyker Heights

Visited the lights and fallen in love with the neighborhood? Be a part of the famed Christmas lights, year after year! Consider this gorgeous apartment, located in the quiet neighborhood of Dyker Heights.

The Modafferi Christmas Lights Show

For over 30 years, Mr. Tony Modafferi has entertained NYC with some of the most beautiful Christmas lights in the borough of Queens. Located in the neighborhood of Howard Beach, Mr. Modafferi’s lights shine bright for visitors near and far.

Tony Modafferi Facebook

Mr. Modafferi began decorating his home for Christmas after losing his brother on 9/11. His brother was a fire captain and was working at the World Trade Center on that fateful day. Mr. Modafferi needed a way to cheer up his family, and the event took on a life of its own.

Where and When To View the Modafferi Light Show

The nightly light show runs from 5pm until 10:00PM each night during the holiday season at 165 Avenue and 97 Street, by Charles Park.

Amaze Light Festival in Flushing

A great option for the entire family to gaze at millions of Christmas lights is the Amaze Light Festival in Flushing. You could easily make an entire evening out of this all-in-one event. The Amaze Light Festival showcases a million lights, a holiday market, and a train ride through sparkling lights.

Located at Citi Field, tickets can be purchased in advance for this holiday spectacular. The Amaze Light Festival features live characters and fun for all ages. For those wanting something to cater to an adult-aged experience, there is an upscale food and beverage area. VIP tickets are also available.

Zing’s Toyporium is a popular option for kids of all ages. You can enjoy a life-sized Lite Bright and write a letter to the big man himself, Santa.

Add-on experiences for all ages are also available. These can be purchased in addition to your regular tickets. The add-ons include Zing’s Thrill Hill and Arctic Experience.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Words cannot describe the grandeur and beauty of the light show presented by Saks Fifth Avenue year after year. The iconic department store is home to some of the most beautiful window displays in the world.

Each year, one of the most spectacular light shows is available to see for everyone walking along the famous street. The show occurs most days during the holiday season, after dusk and into the night. Hundreds of perfectly coordinated LED lights shine and twinkle to holiday music.

Don’t skip viewing the famous window displays before or after viewing the light show. The displays are unveiled each year and always change to bring everyone a surprise experience for the holidays.

Looking to get a convenient and easy commute to view the Saks Fifth Avenue lights each year? Check out this simple one bedroom listing.

Rockefeller Center

It wouldn’t be a Christmas light display list without mentioning the Rockefeller Center. Iconic in name and famous throughout the world, The Rockefeller Center offers so much for the entire family.

For 2022, the Christmas Tree Lighting will occur on November 30th. After the event, the famous tree will shine for Manhattan each day from 6AM-12AM. On Christmas Day, the tree will glow for a full 24 hours. If you prefer to wait a bit later to view the gorgeous tree, New Year’s Day hours will be from 6AM-9PM.

A trip to Rockefeller Center is not complete without skating at The Rink. Located just below the famed Prometheus statue and Christmas tree, The Rink is a must for all visitors to the city. Tickets can be purchased in advance here. General admission prices include skate time and skate rental. VIP tickets can also be purchased. These special tickets allow extra skating time, skate rental, and one hot beverage of your choice. Season passes are also available for anyone wanting to skate multiple times throughout the winter season.

It doesn’t matter if you want to visit a neighborhood close to your home or a world-famous display like Saks Fifth Avenue. The most magical city in the world has something for everyone. Here at City Signal, we hope that your holiday season can be made just a little brighter by visiting some of NYC’s beautiful light displays.

When you think of wine, your mind may naturally wander to the rolling hills of Napa Valley, California. The beautiful wineries found there are seemingly endless and you would never run out of new wines to sample.

But what if you’re an East Coast wine lover? Never fear! There is absolutely no reason to fly across our beautiful country to experience a high-quality winery. The NYC area houses some of the best wineries and offers something for even the most discerning tastes.

If you only have a few hours, there are several wineries in NYC or just outside of it. If you have a little more time and don’t mind a little road trip, there are plenty of those too.

CitySignal has researched some of the best wineries in the NYC area. Keep reading for your comprehensive guide to the best wineries near NYC.

Wineries In NYC

The Red Hook Winery

Mark Snyder founded The Red Hook Winery in 2008. This Brooklyn winery takes pride in working with local grape farmers to produce high-quality wine. Every bottle of Red Hook Wine is produced from New York grapes and bottled on-site at Pier 41.

When visiting The Red Hook Winery, be sure to check out The Tasting Room, with gorgeous views of The Statue of Liberty and Manhattan. This functional space is connected to the winery and is your key to sampling some of the best Red Hook offers. Reservations are not required to The Tasting Room during the week. However, if you want to visit on the weekends, click here to reserve, as it is mandatory. Each tasting lasts approximately 45-60 minutes, and you will have the opportunity to sample six wines.

Can’t make it to The Red Hook Winery as often as you’d like? The winery has that minor inconvenience covered. Join their Wine Club to enjoy the tastes of Red Hook anytime you’d like. There are no fees to join, only perks to gain!

Currently, Red Hook Winery is open five days a week. For additional information, including how to contact Red Hook Winery, click here.

Brooklyn Winery

Have you ever visited a boutique winery? If not, you are in for a treat.

Brooklyn Winery is located in Williamsburg-one of the hippest parts of NYC. This winery specializes in small-batch wines and cutting-edge techniques. Winemaker Conor McCormack sources his grapes from small vineyards across the United States so that Brooklyn Winery can showcase a variety of wines from regions you might not otherwise have the chance to visit.

According to Brooklyn Winery, “We are a commercial urban winery set in the heart of Brooklyn, committed to pushing the boundaries of winemaking by blending traditional old-world methodology with a modern perspective.”

While in the Brooklyn neighborhood, be sure to attend a winery tour and tasting. Brooklyn Winery has perfected the process if you’ve ever wanted to go behind the scenes and have an in-depth view of winemaking. Each tour includes a tasting of six wines made at the winery. This 90-minute educational tour will teach you everything you need to know about the delicious, small batch wines. All wines are available for purchase after the tour. Themed classes and tours are available on a limited basis.

Bring the wine tasting home by joining their Wine Club or with the “Wine Tasting Kit.” Depending on your needs, the tasting kit has multiple options available. If you can’t make it to the Brooklyn Winery as often as you’d like, a Wine Tasting Kit is perfect! Each kit includes bottles of pre-selected wines, a wine-tasting guide, and more.

Reservations are highly recommended but not required at this time. Brooklyn Winery is currently open 7 days a week. You can find additional information here.

Gotham Winery

Smart sustainability practices are the name of the game at Gotham Winery. Their production facility in the Finger Lakes area is located on a sustainable farm. Solar panels give the farm all of the necessary power to make batches of their delicious wines.

Not only does the facility solely use solar power, they use biodynamic processes, and staff have access to electric car power stations. At Gotham Winery, they believe that “the grape should be allowed to tell its story”.

Owner Kwaw Amos and head winemaker Craig Hosback oversee the entire winemaking process at Gotham Winery. They work with several small farms to source various types of grapes to make Gotham Wines.

There are plans for a Wine Bar that will be open soon. Keep an eye out for announcements via their social media outlets.

Rather than a wine club, Gotham Wines offers a Wine Society. Various perks and features await for all Wine Society Members:

  • Twelve bottles in semi-annual shipments of six bottles each
  • Free tastings for members and guests
  • Invitations to private members’ events
  • First access to member-only wines
  • Discounts and access to wine events
  • 10% off all wine purchases
  • Free shipping for New York residents
  • 1-year commitment

To contact Gotham Wines, visit their website for up-to-date hours and updates on the Wine Bar.

Brotherhood Winery

Located roughly one hour away from the heart of NYC lies the oldest winery in America. Brotherhood Winery was founded in 1839, and they continue to create wine in the art that it has always meant to be.

Guided tours are available each weekend and reservations are required.  While on the guided tour, you will be taken through underground cellars, created in the late 19th century. Two hundred oak barrels line the cellars. Some of America’s oldest vintages can still be found here. While in the cellars, you will learn details of the entire winemaking process.

While on the tour, you will be able to sample five wines from a list of ten that are available. The wines change frequently, so be sure to visit often!

Many wineries offer a wine club and Brotherhood Winery is no exception. Unlike some wine clubs, you are able to choose a particular type of wine club to join. You may choose from red, white or mixed wine assortments. Per the website, the following perks are available after joining.

  • FREE SHIPPING for New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, and District of Columbia club members.
  • DISCOUNT SHIPPING for Florida, Minnesota, and Nevada club members.
  • 10% OFF ALL WINES available online.
  • Two complimentary wine-tasting tickets.
  • Ability to customize wines to fit your taste.

Brotherhood Winery has various hours, depending on the time of year. Currently, the winery is open six days a week and only closed on Mondays. Tours are only available Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Benmarl Winery

For the perfect day trip from NYC, give Benmarl Winery a visit. Located about 70 miles from the City, Benmarl has a pedigree that beats most all wineries. Benmarl has the distinction of being the oldest vineyard in America. This 37-acre estate overlooks the beautiful Hudson River area.

The proprietors at Benmarl Winery take pride in letting their grapes shine through in the final product. They believe it’s important to let the origin of the grapes speak for itself.

Outdoor Wine Tastings are available while visiting Benmarl. All tastings are currently held outdoors, and reservations are needed. When attending a tasting, you will be able to sample a flight or a glass of wine. You will be able to use your reserved table for up to 90-minutes. A server will help you decide on the perfect glass to sample. The Kitchen is open 7-days a week and snacks can be purchased to have during the tasting.

As with most wineries in the area, Benmarl Winery has a Wine Club. With a membership, you will receive 16 bottles of wine to try. Four bottles of wine are sent out on 4 different occasions throughout the year. You can choose between red, white or a mixed box.

For more information about Benmarl Winery, including hours of operation and tour details, click here.

Raphael

For another great day trip away from NYC, Give Raphael a try. Located just 90 miles from Manhattan, Raphael is the perfect mix of class and innovation.

Owner John Petrucelli pays homage to his ancestral home in the architecture of the beautiful grounds of Raphael. Petrucelli was inspired by the Italian monasteries of his homeland, and their beauty shines through in Raphael. Their facility is the perfect blend of beautiful architecture and cutting-edge wine-making equipment. The winery is located underground, and for good reason. This gives the perfect, cool environment for wine-making.

Unlike many of the other wineries in the area, the winery and the vineyards are located on the same grounds. Raphael uses grapes that they grow and are not sourced from other locations. Raphael is one of the only vineyards left in the United States that harvests their grapes entirely by hand.

Raphael also offers a Wine Club. According to their website, benefits include:

  • Quarterly shipments of two, four or six specially selected wines at a 20% discount
  • 20% off ALL wine purchases
  • 20% off ALL gift shop purchases
  • Complimentary single flight tastings for member and a guest with each visit excluding club tasting days
  • Invitation to attend Monthly Club Tastings for member and a guest (Additional guests $25 per person)
  • Access to exclusive Club-Only wines and library selections
  • Refer a friend for membership enrollment, receive a $25 Raphael gift card

Currently, Raphael is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you would like to make a tasting reservation, you will need to call or email the location. For additional information, visit their website or social media channels.

Now that you have learned all about wineries local to NYC, it’s time to plan your trip! Most of the wineries do require or highly recommend making reservations ahead of time, especially if you wish to participate in a tasting. Enjoy an afternoon date with your significant other or plan a group outing with friends.

Visiting a winery is a wonderful, low-cost way to enjoy time with your loved ones. Winery experiences are somewhat all-inclusive. You receive an educational tour and sips of their delicious wares.

If you choose one of the wineries located in NYC, make a day of it and grab dinner in the City before going home. You can sit around the table and discuss the day and the wine club you just may want to join.

If a winery day trip is in the cards for you, a little more planning may be necessary. You might want to reserve a hotel room or Airbnb in the area nearby the winery. This way, you can fully enjoy everything the venue has to offer.

If so, Greenmarket has you covered! Several Greenmarket locations have fresh, local turkeys for sale this year. Each location offers different varieties of turkey. This is determined by the local farms that are supplying each Greenmarket location. The following farms are supplying turkeys this year:

  • Halal Pastures Farm
  • Ramble Creek Farm
  • Quattros Game Farm
  • Violet Hill Farm

There is limited availability, so check with each location as soon as possible. A full listing of farmers market locations that are offering pasture-raised turkeys is available here.

We hope our listing of the best farmers markets will be a helpful tool when planning your upcoming holiday feasts. No matter your location, there is a great farmers market with fresh produce, turkeys,  and other items, in each of the five boroughs.

The 2022 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is less than a month away. It’s hard to believe that one of the most popular televised events of the year will be upon us so soon!

Are you an old pro at attending the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade or is this your first-year attending? Maybe you don’t love the idea of fighting the crowds but love watching the event televised on Thanksgiving morning every year.

It doesn’t matter what your situation is. This American tradition is one that generations of families have enjoyed and luckily, there is no end in sight.

Keep reading for a comprehensive guide to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. You will learn the basics, some history and maybe even a few pro tips to help you along the way!

History of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

To fully appreciate the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, you must travel back to 1924. Macy’s introduced its first parade to the world, as a celebration of its new opening and in hopes of bringing additional Christmas shoppers to its store. On the morning of Thanksgiving 1924, New Yorkers experienced their first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The first parade was coined as a Christmas parade, rather than a celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The first parade was very small compared to the goliath that the parade has grown into. Macy’s store employees put on the humble, six-mile parade. Even back in 1924, floats were used that reflected popular nursery rhymes of the time. The floats were coordinated to match the Macy’s store Christmas display and included Little Red Riding Hood, Little Miss Muffett, and The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe. Of course, Santa rounded out the familiar faces children yearned to see.

The store employees participating in the parade were especially festive. Some of them dressed as cowboys, some as clowns, and others were knights. Most notably, the Central Park Zoo loaned several animals to the parade. Spectators witnessed bears, monkeys, camels, and elephants.

The tradition of live animals in the parade did not last. Helium-filled balloons replaced live animals, and that tradition has increased over the years. The original character balloon was Felix the Cat. He was introduced in the 1927 parade.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Route and Preparation

Since its inception, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has lessened in route length. Originally spanning 6 miles, the parade now tops out at 2.5 miles in length.

The parade begins on the Upper West Side and travels to Midtown. Click here to view a detailed map of the parade route.

The parade doesn’t just happen overnight. Tucked away in a warehouse in New Jersey, over 30 artists, highly skilled in their trade, work tirelessly to bring you the best parade possible. The 72,000-square-foot warehouse is home to the Macy’s Parade Studio, where all the magic begins!

Each of the carpenters, animators, and painters works year-round to bring NYC the best parade that they can. Over 300 pounds of glitter is used on the floats, costumes, and balloons. The creators make and maintain over 4,200 costumes that can be used.

Can I Participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?

There is a very strict participation policy that must be followed regarding the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Since the parade began in 1924, participants have been limited to a select grouping of people. Only Macy’s employees, their families and friends, and others who have a direct relationship with the parade can participate.

The only exception is the invited talent that performs during the parade. This includes celebrities, singers, and marching bands.

Marching bands can apply to be a part of the parade. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2024 parade. Click here to apply.

You can catch a glimpse of the larger-than-life balloons before the parade starts. Each year, the balloons are inflated the night before the parade by the American Museum of Natural History on 79th Street.

How Can I View the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?

There are many options for viewing the parade in NYC. Macy’s partners with the NYPD to regulate crowds and provide the best experience for all. They will follow the current protocol in regard to state and city health regulations. Viewing options will be all along the 2.5-mile route throughout the city. The route will go from the Upper West Side to Midtown. Keep checking on the Macy’s Parade FAQ page for updates.

If you cannot make it to view the parade in person, there are a few options for you.

  • View the LIVE broadcast on NBC. The parade begins at 9:00AM in all time zones on November 24th, 2022.
  • Catch the livestream of the parade on Peacock.

Pro Tips for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Experiences

Local business owner Christine Lazzara who runs Just Ask Christine: Custom Curated NYC Experiences offers her recommendations and insights into this yearly event.

  • Visit the Museum of Natural History in the early part of the day before Thanksgiving, or even better, book a private tour of the Upper Section of Central Park (where visitors rarely venture). Upon exit or upon completion of your tour, you will be exactly where you want to be to have full sight of the Thanksgiving Eve inflation festivities!
  • Go for a Night Walk (or night tour!) and park yourself right in front of Macy’s to watch the Stage and Performance area be built before your eyes!  There is nothing like behind-the-scenes action, and there are no restrictions to this area while this is happening.  While there, you will be in the perfect spot, in direct sight of the gorgeous Empire State Building towering over you in its glorious colors, for your full admiration.
  • When needing a restroom stop, ALWAYS visit a Hotel!  Not only will you have access to the cleanest and most comfortable facilities, but you will also find comfortable couches to take a rest on and oftentimes fun games to play while there, which is great for entertaining your kids who might be begging you for a break.

If you are in the market for a historical residence with plenty of flair, 155 Franklin Street is the place to be. Dating back to 1882, the Sugar Loaf Building is an architectural gem known for its historical past and exciting present. It was built by George W. DaCunha, and Franklin Baylies renovated the building in 1912.

At its inception, the Sugar Loaf Building was built for storage, and it continued to be used for that purpose until 1996. The transformation into private residences began at that time.

In 1996, the building went through its first major remodel. At that time, condos were constructed, and some of its first tenants moved in. Throughout the years, condominiums have been sold to real estate investors, NYC residents, and celebrities alike.

Each of the 10 condominiums and single commercial unit of the Sugar Loaf building feature many of its original details. Across the 40,682 square feet of living and storage space, wooden beams line the ceilings and exposed brick highlight the outer walls. Steel columns in the original floorplan still line the interiors of the residences.

Taylor Swift’s Neighbors With Famous Faces

Walking by the Sugar Loaf Building, you just might walk past a myriad of entertainment and sports’ famous faces, but none will be more popular than singer Taylor Swift. Ms. Swift is a long-time resident of the Sugar Loaf Building and owns two separate condos, as well as a townhouse.

Ms. Swift bought her first residence at the Sugar Loaf Building in 2014 for $19.95 million from Peter Jackson-director of Lord of the Rings. This condo extends across the entire top floor of the building and is roughly 8,000 square feet. Taylor Swift purchased her second condo for $9.75 million in an off-market deal. This 3,540-square-foot condo is on the second floor.

Taylor Swift isn’t the only celebrity to have owned a residence in the Sugar Loaf Building. Comedian Aziz Ansari and actor Orlando Bloom have both owned homes at 155 Franklin Street.

Currently, there are no active listings in the building, but there are neighboring residences for sale ranging from $5.8 to almost $14 million. How would you like to be Taylor Swift’s new neighbor?

Tribeca

Located in the borough of Manhattan, Tribeca is an upscale neighborhood teeming with popular faces and low-key yet upscale venues. Coined “Triangle Below Canal Street,” by many, Tribeca is an incredibly sought-after area of Manhattan.

In the early 1900s, the Tribeca neighborhood was a bustling area focused on textiles and dry goods. Once the 1960s arrived, those businesses moved out of the neighborhood. Soon, groups of artists found homes in the vacant warehouses. Art flourished in the area, and large galleries such as Bortolami and Postmasters Gallery call Tribeca their home today.

Originally known as the Butter and Egg District and Washington Market by local vendors, in the 1970s, the artists of Lispenard Street decided to name the neighborhood after the three streets that form a triangular block-Church Street, Broadway, and Canal Street. The artists employed the services of city planning members to “map” out the area and help them name their home, similar to the process that the SoHo Artists Association took and named their association, The Triangle Below Canal Block Association. However, later on, a reporter mistakenly assumed that the name was for the entire neighborhood, not the triangular shape of the three streets, and the neighborhood’s title was cemented as Tribeca.

Over the years, the area has grown to nearly double the size of nearby SoHo and now extends east of Broadway to Centre Street, toward West Street, and downtown to Vesey.

Architecture and the Tribeca Neighborhood

Investors and real estate connoisseurs around the globe love the buildings in Tribeca for a reason, and the Sugar Loaf Building is no exception. The majority of the neighborhood’s pre-Civil War architecture is still proudly standing.

In Tribeca, you will find one of the world’s largest groupings of Neo-Grec design. This gorgeous architectural marvel is reflected by the neo-classical style, with heavy Greek influences.

Loft-style condos pepper the streets of this trendy neighborhood, and low-rises with wrought-iron facades are coveted by many, like the Cast Iron House and the Worth Building. Tribeca and Soho have earned the bragging rights of having the largest amount of iron facades in the world.

The Cast Iron House in Tribeca. RealtyHop listing

Residents and visitors to the building have many options for entertainment and dining nearby. The Frenchette is perfect for date night or for bringing family from out of town. Locanda Verde is a great spot for breakfast or brunch.

Families will find everything they need in Tribeca while living at the Sugar Loaf Building. TriBeCa Community School and Independence School are just a few of the possibilities. Take the kids to Washington Market Park for a great afternoon of playing with their friends, and maybe chat it up with your new neighbor Taylor Swift?

Times have changed since the onset of COVID.

Rules and regulations have made us all adjust how we do many of our daily activities. It hasn’t been so easy to shop in person at our favorite stores. Online shopping has been the best friend to many during these times that are the “new normal.”

With the changing times comes additional hardships. The economy has suffered in some ways, and families now may have to budget differently than before.

In true New York fashion, @stoopinnyc has come to the rescue. With many people moving in and out of NYC, there are free furniture finds for the taking. More than just furniture, you can find almost anything by stooping, you must be the first to claim it!

One of the more popular Instagram accounts dedicated to stooping, @stoopinnyc showcases some of the best finds in the five boroughs.

Do you love to shop at flea markets or peruse second-hand stores in your neighborhood? If so, getting in on the stooping action is for you. Keep reading to find some of the best (and bizarre!) finds throughout the city.

Electric Smoker

If you have the space and your apartment will allow it, this electric smoker would be a great find for your balcony. Saving you several hundreds of dollars, electric smokers let you smoke various meats that would cost much more to order from a restaurant.

Just plug in this electric smoker and in a few hours, you will have a perfectly smoked Boston butt for pulled pork sandwiches.

Vintage Sewing Machine Desk

Do you love to sew? Maybe you have fond memories of sewing with your grandmother as a small child.

This beautiful, vintage sewing machine desk will invoke memories of days gone by. You will need to visit your local second-hand store to purchase a vintage sewing machine to mount in your “new” desk. When you aren’t using the sewing machine, it tucks away neatly below the desk.

Be sure to polish the pedals that are located below the desk so that it looks like your grandma would remember. If you choose to use this as a regular writing desk, the pedal can be the perfect footrest.

Jet-Ski

Located in the Bronx, this Jet-Ski was recently put out on the sidewalk, in search of its new home. While we are unsure if it was in working order, it does appear to be a great “fixer-upper”.

If you were lucky enough to grab this find, here’s to hoping that you have adequate space to store it. When you are ready to test it in the water, you will need a trailer to haul it on. Even without knowing if it runs, this is a great find if you are in the market for a small watercraft.

Washer and Dryer

Recently, a washer and dryer set was found stooping in Brooklyn! This matching set would look great in a roomy laundry room. Just be sure your apartment has the space before hauling this up three flights of stairs.

This set by LG appeared to be brand new. If bought new in a store, this washer and dryer could cost you around $2,000. If you are in the stooping game, this just might be your unicorn.

9 Barstools and 2 Tables

A post shared by Stooping NYC (@stoopingnyc)

You read that correctly. Nine barstools and two tables.

These barstools appear to have been used in a casual restaurant. They would be great for a classroom or for another eclectic restaurant that might open soon.

The tables do not match but that adds to the charm.

Ping Pong Table

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stooping NYC (@stoopingnyc)

At some point, you or your child might have asked Santa Claus for a ping-pong table. Of course, this is a sizeable object that isn’t always practical for NYC apartments. If you do have the space, you will probably want to fold it up and tuck it away behind other furniture or even in the laundry room.

If you don’t aspire to play ping pong in the Olympics, this could easily double as a funky table or desk. You’ll definitely be putting a smile on your kids’ faces for Christmas if you snagged this great find out in Staten Island, basically the same distance away as the North Pole.

Kitchen Island Cart

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stooping NYC (@stoopingnyc)

To maximize space, a kitchen island cart is a wonderful option. This easily adds room for prepping meals and storing extra kitchen tools. A built-in island will not fit in many apartments and can be extremely pricey.

A nicer, portable kitchen cart such as this would be perfect for entertaining this holiday season. Whoever grabbed this cart was one lucky cook.

Piano

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stooping NYC (@stoopingnyc)

Maybe you play the piano or maybe your child wants to start taking lessons. Either way, this piano was just waiting for a new home in Bedford.

Tiny apartment dwellers, this could even benefit you. This stand-up piano is minimal on space and perfect for hosting an impromptu concert for your friends. The lucky new owner of this piano is surely playing a little ditty by now.

Mudroom Bench

A post shared by Stooping NYC (@stoopingnyc)

Cold and blustery NYC winters create the necessity for snow boots and heavy coats. If you need a special space to store them, you definitely need a mudroom bench.

This bench has hooks at the perfect height for hanging your coats. The bench is made for taking your boots off after a long trek from work. Its new owner is ready for winter storage!

Flat Screen Television

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stooping NYC (@stoopingnyc)

A television isn’t necessary, but most of us want one to keep up with the news and to be entertained. Unfortunately, new technology is always on the horizon, and it’s hard to keep up with the most up-to-date television.

Recently, this flat screen television needed a new home, and found one through @stoopinnyc.

Are you ready to join the world of Stooping? If you have an adventurous spirit, this could be a perfect activity for you. On top of being a great activity, it can help keep your budget under control.

If you find some great things through stooping, let us here at CitySignal know. We would love to see your finds. Someone else’s trash is someone else’s treasure!

Rewind your mind back to the beginning of 2022.

Did you make a resolution to live a healthier lifestyle? Maybe you vowed to be kinder to yourself. You may have said you would try to rid yourself of toxins and other harmful substances that many put into their bodies.

If any of these statements ring true for you (or if you are interested in learning more), Anima Mundi Apothecary has the resources and tools to get you on the right path to wellness.

Humble Beginnings of Anima Mundi Apothecary

Born in Costa Rica, Adriana Ayales founded Anima Mundi with the intention of spreading her love for ancient, healing medicine. Adriana is an herbalist, educator and medicine maker. While living in Costa Rica, Adriana learned remedies from multiple tribes and European alchemy.

Since she was young, Adriana studied a particular type of shamanic healing. She also learned to work with botanicals early on in life. The founder was born with the gift of intuitive sight and has reported seeing auras and spirits when she was young. She later learned to use this gift and combine it with ancient medicine.>Ancient Medicine

According to Anima Mundi’s website, “Our founder Adriana moved to Brooklyn from Costa Rica with a mission to bridge remedies from native people within Central and South America, to modern-day needs and imbalances. Adriana has dedicated her life to learning ancient remedies and how to effectively use them, rather than potentially harmful Western medications.

Healing From The Inside Out

Adriana moved to Brooklyn and began Anima Mundi in her small, in-home office. Since that time, the Apothecary has grown exponentially.

The herbal factory that produces the high-quality products is located just beside the Brooklyn location of Anima Mundi and both locations offer a tonic bar where you can sip on magical concoctions.

Over 200 different herbs, grown around the world, are used to make products that are specially crafted for everyday use. The apothecary offers a large variety of botanicals in several different categories.

Whatever ails you, Anima Mundi has you covered.

Anima Mundi’s Offerings

Immunity

No matter the season, we all need an immunity booster. During the winter months, this is especially important. COVID-19 has taken the need for immunity-fighting herbals to a whole new level. Maybe you have sinus and allergy issues. No matter the reason, Anima Mundi has something to help.

The Allergy Relief Bundle kit contains everything you need to fight the sniffles and that heavy dusting of pollen on your front porch.

Beauty

It’s no secret that our skin, nails, and hair need a little help as we age. The use of collagen supplements has been on the rise for this very reason. Why not use an all-natural, organic collagen booster?

Try the Dirty Rose Chai Collagen Booster for its amazing anti-aging benefits. Just mix it into your favorite beverage and sip!

Brain Health

Do you ever feel a little sluggish or maybe you have occasional mood swings? Anima Mundi has several products that boost your serotonin level and helps to even out your mood. These products can help your cognitive function as well.

Definitely order the Happiness Tonic. This tonic can stabilize your hormones and level out your dopamine and serotonin levels.

Stress Relief

Stress is a very real issue for many. Many factors in our lives can lead to stress that can lead to even larger health issues.

If stress is an issue for you, give Ashwagandha a try. This super remedy helps to lower cortisol levels and fight fatigue. It can also help with cravings and weight management. It’s also a great way to unwind after a long day of work.

Sleep

Sometimes, we are tired but we cannot go to sleep. Maybe you’ve already tried counting sheep and it didn’t help at all. Anima Mundi has several products that can gently help you to fall asleep and have restful sleep.

Brew a cup of Calm Tea before bedtime. This perfectly blended mixture of herbs is formulated to help you wind down and get a great night’s rest.

Anima Mundi Locations

New York is lucky enough to have two Anima Mundi locations-one in SoHo at 117 Crosby St, and one in Brooklyn at 31 Noble St. Both locations have dedicated staff to help you learn ancient medicine. If you are unable to visit New York, you can shop from the convenience of your own home. But if you’re in the city, a visit to the Anima Mundi tonic bars is an absolute necessity. What’s better than sitting outdoors in NYC and enjoying a healing tonic?

Located at 246 Spring Street, The Dominick is one of the trendiest hotels available in SoHo. Its beautifully appointed rooms offer gorgeous views of Manhattan and the Hudson River. Boasting a five-diamond rating from AAA, The Dominick is the epitome of luxury. The condominium hotel has a spa, a bar, and an outdoor pool. Some of the larger rooms have an outdoor terrace and all of the rooms have gorgeous views.

The Dominick is a 46-story hotel with 391 rooms. Due to this area being zoned for manufacturing, the hotel cannot house full-time residents. It is considered a hotel-condominium and restrictions are placed on how long an owner can stay at the residence each year. Any one room cannot be used for more than 120 days (4 months) per year by the same person. When the owners are not at the hotel, hotel guests can rent the rooms. Agents market this as “an excellent investment opportunity.”

Currently, The Dominick is part of the prestigious Preferred Hotels & Resorts’ Legends Collection.

Trump SoHo and Building Woes

The towering building wasn’t born The Dominick. It began as Trump Soho and construction began on the behemoth in 2006. The hotel was a collaboration between The Trump Organization, Tamir Sapir, and The Bayrock Group.

Several issues and accidents plagued the hotel during its time being built. During the excavation process, human bones were found, stalling construction. It was later learned that the bones were likely from 19th-century burial vaults. The vaults had been placed under the old Spring Street Presbyterian Church. The church stood in the place of the future hotel until it burned down in 1963.

Once construction returned, more mishaps plagued the hotel. In early 2008, an incident caused the injury of three construction workers and the death of a third construction worker who fell to his death from the 42nd floor and was decapitated. The incident happened when wet molds for concrete collapsed and the safety netting failed to catch one of the workers.

Work on the hotel was halted after these terrible accidents. By early fall 2008, construction resumed after violations were issued and conditions improved.

Not only were there casualties and extreme accidents, but the building also had funding issues. Bank of America backed out of one loan and the building debt had to be restructured.

Drastically Declining Business At The Trump SoHo

By November 2011, the hotel had several of its owners suing them for fraud. French soccer player Olivier DaCourt was one of the main owners suing the company. It was claimed that they were told false information in order to convince the owners to buy. Reportedly, owners were offered partial refunds to not participating in the lawsuit.

During the 2016 presidential election, most Trump properties saw a large downturn in sales. Trump SoHo was not immune to these changes and eventually Trump would disassociate himself from the hotel. It is largely believed that the Trump name is the largest cause for these events.

According to CNN, the original room rates of $700 per night had declined to $400 per night. Many hotel workers were beginning to be laid off. Trump SoHo’s signature restaurant Koi eventually closed as well.

Donald Trump never actually owned the Trump Soho. The hotel was managed by Trump International Hotels Management and the Trump name was only a licensed part of the building.

What Is The Trump SoHo Called Now?

On December 21st, 2017, Trump SoHo was renamed The Dominick.

Since the name change, The Dominick has thrived. The seemingly small action of a name change has been huge for the landmark. It was reported by Bloomberg that sales increased over 20% by the next year. The hotel saw an increase of over 7,000 more room nights booked in 2018.

You may have heard the old adage-you can put makeup on a pig, but it’s still a pig.

Well, that is not true for Trump Soho/The Dominick. Simply changing the name DID change the course of history for the hotel.

Many patrons did not want to stay in a hotel with the name Trump on it.

Jack Ezon, the founder of travel company Embark, blames the Trump name for many clients not wanting to associate with the hotel. He states, “Seven out of eight times people would say, “I’m not staying at a Trump hotel’ when I suggested it”. He indicated that was the exact reason that LeBron James had refused to stay in the hotel. Many NBA players once loved staying in the hotel. One of its signature amenities was its extra-long beds which easily suited their tall height. Since the name change, Mr. Ezon has indicated that business is now back to usual.

For our next stop on our tour around the world of wedding traditions and customs, we are visiting Ireland!

At a traditional Irish wedding, Celtic customs abound! Full of romance and age-old traditions, an Irish wedding is a beautiful sight. According to Nora Sheils of Bridal Bliss Events, “Many of our wedding traditions originated from the fear of evil spirits in ancient Ireland and other parts of Europe.”

Wedding Attire

During an Irish wedding, the bride wears a traditional white wedding dress. Some brides will adorn their dress with Celtic symbols such as knots, shamrocks, or crosses. Irish lace is very popular and will sometimes be worn as a veil. Irish lace is so popular that it is sometimes used to adorn cakes and to tie the bridal bouquet. Many brides choose to wear a cape made of heavier fabrics to protect them from the cold during the winter months.

Things run a bit more toward Irish heritage with the groom’s attire. Most grooms will wear a tartan kilt. Irish kilts are made of fabrics that represent the county in which they reside. This is very different from Scottish kilts, which represent families and lineage. Along with the kilt, the groom usually wears a Brian Boru jacket and a white dress shirt, bow tie, knee-high socks, and traditional Ghillie Brogue shoes.

Would you like to incorporate an Irish kilt into your wedding ceremony? Check out The Piper’s Cove Scottish & Irish Imports in Kearny, NY.

Symbols of Luck at an Irish Wedding

Once upon a time, brides in Ireland carried real, full-size horseshoes down the aisle. They didn’t just carry them any old way. They carried them open side facing up, as a symbol of neverending luck.

Now, it is still common to have a horseshoe somewhere on the bridal attire. Usually, a bride will have a tiny horseshoe interwoven with her bouquet. Small confetti-sized tokens sometimes adorn the reception tables in the shapes of four-leaf clovers and more tiny horseshoes. The luck of the Irish!

For an endless array of wedding decoration options, give Magic Decor in Brooklyn a call.

The Honeymoon Has Irish Origins

Have you ever wondered where the word “honeymoon” originated? Well, today is your lucky day!

After an ancient Irish wedding, friends and family made toasts to the newlyweds with mead. Mead is made with honey and the brew was given to them for 30 days, which is the typical term of a moon cycle.

Interested in adding a touch of ancient Ireland to your festivities? Enlightenment Wines and Meadery in Brooklyn is just the place for all of your mead needs.

Claddagh Rings

You have probably seen a Claddagh ring without even realizing it. The Claddagh ring represents three distinctive elements: love, loyalty, and friendship.

When you are single, you will wear your Claddagh ring on your right hand. More than likely, this ring was passed down to you by your mother. If single, you will also wear the ring with the heart pointed downwards, toward your fingertips. This symbolizes that your heart is not yet taken.

After an Irish woman is engaged, she will begin wearing her Claddagh ring on her left hand. It is not until she is officially married that she will flip the ring over, so that the heart’s point is in the direction of her heart, rather than her fingertips.

You will also see the Claddagh design on many other things, not just rings. You may see it on other forms of jewelry, clothing, and other items. It is a universal Irish symbol!

Visit A Shape of Lies in the East Village for handmade jewelry and museum replica jewelry, featuring Claddagh rings and spoon rings.

Tying the Knot

By now, most people have heard the phrase, “tying the knot”. This originated in ancient Ireland!

During the wedding ceremony, the new couple’s hands will be tied together with fabric, into a ceremonial knot. This beautiful part of the ceremony has been copied many times and is a very popular tradition throughout the world.

If you would like to recreate this wonderful symbolic gesture in your own wedding, check out NY Designer Fabrics. They sell absolutely any type of fabric your heart wants and your mind can imagine!

Have you ever attended an Irish wedding? Maybe you have experienced some of the traditions in this article. We would love for you to let us know!

Spring.

The time for renewal and fresh beginnings.

The time for warmer weather, Easter dresses, and outdoor activities.

For a lot of us, the warmer weather brings out our “inner perfectionist” in the spring cleaning department. Many retailers begin featuring plastic bins and organizing items to help your process get started.

Everyone’s home and situations are different but we all need to complete a deep cleaning on occasion. Grab a notepad, pen, and a cocktail. It’s time to learn how to effectively clean and organize your home this spring!

Make a Plan

It may sound simple but it’s highly recommended. Be sure to make a plan before starting! Do not plan to do everything in one day. You won’t get a proper deep cleaning if you rush.

Start with mapping out your home. A simple sketch will suffice. Make a shortlist of what you know you can accomplish that day. Trying to do too much at once can be overwhelming and sometimes lead to throwing in the towel altogether. Once you decide on that days’ plan, map out your next available day to continue deep cleaning.

Do you need a bit more guidance in your life? Maybe you need a pre-made list to work with. If that’s the case, there are plenty of options on the web for printables of every kind. Check out this website for some great FREE printables to get started.

Buy Your Necessary Supplies

You can’t give your home a good spring cleaning without proper supplies. Before you even remotely start cleaning, be sure that you have everything that you need. Below are some great ideas to get you started.

  • Detergent-Cleaning your bed sheets, towels, and dishcloths
  • Multi-Surface Disinfectant-To deep clean all of your hard surfaces
  • Bathroom Cleaning Supplies-Deep-cleaning the shower, toilets, sink
  • Large Storage Bins-Organizing and Storing
  • Trash Bags-For throwing away and donating

Everyone has their own preference for brands and scents to choose from. Many people enjoy using eco-friendly products that are good for the environment and for their families. Want a large assortment of green cleaning products shipped right to your door? Be sure to visit Grove Collaborative. All new customers receive a free gift with their first purchase.

If you prefer a little assistance in cleaning your home, check out Zen Home Cleaning. This NYC company only uses green cleaning products and its staff is highly vetted.

Repurpose if Possible

Are you the crafty sort? Do you have a lot of things in your home that you really don’t want to throw away?

If so, consider repurposing them! Many older items can be made into other, more useful household items.

Old books can be fashioned into shelves. An old ladder can be turned into a bookshelf. Plastic spoons can be made into a lamp. For these great ideas and more, click here.

Donate

One of the best things you can do with your unwanted items is to donate them to a great cause. Many wonderful organizations are just waiting for your gently used items to give to those who are in need. Some places accept donations and resell them. The proceeds are then used to provide for families that are less fortunate.

**Be sure to call ahead to your chosen organization. Some have specific drop-off times or pick-up services.**

Some great organizations in and around NYC are:

Disposal of Unwanted Items

If you wish to throw away some of your unwanted items from your home, many items can be picked up with your standard trash pickup. Click here to be sure your items are eligible to be picked up by the sanitation department.

Cleanout Express may be the answer to all of your junk removal needs. This Queens-based company proudly services all five boroughs. This company can remove all of your unwanted items from apartments, construction sites, businesses, and more. Cleanout Express recycles over 60% of the unwanted items that they remove from homes.

Powell and Sons is another great company that can remove trash and unwanted items from your residence or business. Powell and Sons provides service to all five boroughs as well. You can fill out a form on their website to get a quick, free quote. Their junk removal specialists are ready to provide you with quick and effective service.
