Are fully powered by renewable energy buildings the future of real estate?

What is One Manhattan West?

One Manhattan West is a sixty-seven-floor sleek skyscraper designed by Skidmore, Owings&Merrill architects, and managed by Brookfield properties. The building is located adjacent to Penn Station and is much like a self-contained oasis that houses office spaces, apartments, food/retail/pop-up space, an ice rink, and a two-acre public plaza with a year-round arts program. Stunning features include column-free floor plans, high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling views of NYC, and a landscaped rooftop terrace.

Renewable energy is the trend of the future

As part of one of the most prominent NY state renewable energy deals, Brookfield Renewable will provide hydropower for the skyscraper. The five-year agreement is part of a larger goal across the Brookfield Properties portfolio to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Brookfield renewable operates more than seventy hydropower facilities across the state and in the future, will supply tenants with a digital tracking tool for each tenant’s energy consumption.

Net-zero, the wave of the future

The public is becoming more and more mindful of environmental health, pollution, global warming, and climate change. As a result, there is a growing need for renewable energy sources. The latest growing trend among architects is net-zero energy and minimizing our carbon footprint. A net-zero energy building is a building that utilizes the same energy that it generates on-site.

Famous renewable energy giants

Most notable examples of renewable energy constructions include the

  • United Therapeutics Unisphere in Maryland, USA. A 135,000 square foot building of a mix of office, retail, and public amenity space that will be charged with managing an unlimited supply of transplantable organs. The final result of the building will be that of a Net Zero Site using solar, geothermal, earth-coupled heating/cooling, natural ventilation, a thermal pool, and daylight harvesting, among other things.
  • National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL) in Colorado, USA, where almost all the buildings of the campus are marked with LEED or net-zero stature. NREL also was built with water conservation in mind and all the systems are easy to use and maintain. Currently, the facility maintains a 50% better efficiency than the Colorado current commercial codes.
  • La Jolla Commons in San Diego, California, is a 13-story, 302,261-square-foot office tower built with a glass curtain wall system that has highly efficient, insulated, low-emissivity coated double-paned glass.
  • Indira Paryavran Bhawan, Ministry of environment and forest, New Delhi, India, constructed in 2014. India’s first net-zero building has more than 50% of the area covered with appropriate vegetation and 75% of the built floor space uses daylight to light the rooms as opposed to needing to spend energy on artificial lighting. The building has both a GRIHA 5 star rating and a LEED Platinum rating and uses techniques like wastewater recycling and geothermal heat exchange.
  • Avasara Academy, Lavale, Pune, India, a net-zero building completed in 2020 that obtained its title through technologies that reduce energy dissipation by 85%. This is partially due to solar chimneys, earth ducts and vertical cavities that help with naturally and efficiently ventilating the campus.

Green energy creates real estate value

Since the construction industry is responsible for 39% of global carbon emissions, more and more companies are demanding sustainable energy sources. The customer interest in renewable energy demonstrates an upward trend among real estate buyers.
As more people consider long-term climate decisions when investing, it is evident that decarbonization contributes to real estate evaluation. In addition, environmentally friendly practices also impact the workforce/job market. Companies that value renewable energy attract and retain talent based on aligned environmental values.

Regulating industry advancements

As environmentally-friendly values become progressively popular and lucrative, The World Economic Forum (an agency that aims to design a standard set of environmental principles in partnership with the real estate industry) is racing to define environmental principles in collaboration with the real estate industry. But unfortunately, the regulations and laws of cities and states are still playing catch-up when it comes to diminishing our carbon footprint.

May the Statue of Liberty symbolize freedom for Ukrainian refugees as it once did for World War II survivors.

New York City, the home of refugees

Since the 1850s, the Big Apple welcomed immigrants seeking refuge and hoping for a better life. As a result, New York City has become the Mecca of multiculturalism, culture, and diversity. New Yorkers and visitors alike only need to set one foot outside to experience various cultures right on their doorstep. The whole city celebrates its multicultural identity annually during the multicultural fest.

As the most current humanitarian crisis in Ukraine impacts the world, we must do our best to welcome refugees and save lives.

Invasion of Ukraine

Previously, the Ukraine War started in 2014. On March 24, 2022, Putin once again invaded Ukraine and questioned the legitimacy of its government. Putin claimed that his motivation for the invasion was to free the oppressed Russians that were the victims of a statewide genocide. This blatant lie was used as rhetoric to cover up his dreams of expanding the Soviet Union and fears of NATO’s expansion.

Putin’s history with Ukraine

Since the end of 2009, the European Court of Human Rights ECHR has examined 115 criminal human rights violations of the Russian government. The crimes were disappearances, murder, torture, and destruction of territory in Georgia and Chechnya.

By 2014 the international community imposed sanctions on Russia for involvement in the eastern Ukraine war and its annexation of Crimea. In addition, the International Criminal Court organization (ICC) investigated Putin’s war crimes, an act that prompted Russia to withdraw its membership in 2016.

Putin’s modus operandi since 1997

Claiming property that’s not his own seems intuitive to Putin, who plagiarized his dissertation when defending an economics degree in 1996. According to the Brookings institution, 15 pages of this illustrious candidate’s dissertation derive from Strategic Planning and Policy-an American textbook authored by Mr. King and Mr. Cleland. Moreover, the St. Petersburg Mining Institute awarded the degree (an institution that Putin never physically attended). Apparently, Putin worked remotely long before the pandemic forced the rest of the world to do the same. Since then, appropriation has become the standard modus operandi for the Russian dictator.

While he is attempting to appropriate the Ukrainian territory, numerous ICC investigations into the war crimes are ongoing into the invasion and annexation of Crimea. Given the speed of the inquiry, no one knows if the verdict will get passed during his lifetime. Even then, there would be no way of enforcing a penalty unless Putin left the confines of Russia. These surreal effects of the international justice system are much like the novel, The Trial by Franz Kafka. However, unlike in the Kafka novel, these crimes are real.

What’s happening to the Ukrainian refugees

Since the Russian invasion, over 3 million people have fled Ukraine. The majority of Ukrainian refugees (over 2,145,000) seek safety through the neighboring border with Poland. However, they have no idea where their final destination may be. As a result, many have gone to Romania, Moldova, Hungary, and Slovakia. On March 4, the European Union announced the temporary protection directive that allows Ukrainian refugees to live and work in any European Union country for three years or less. By March 21, the UK issued over 12,400 temporary visas to Ukrainians with family ties in the UK. On February 25, Ireland got rid of any visa requirements for Ukrainians.

Other countries are scrambling to absorb the fleeing population of one of the largest countries in Europe during this historic refuge. So, where does the US stand?

Will the US welcome refugees with open arms

On March 2, the Department of Homeland Security offered temporary protected status TPS for any Ukrainians living in the US before March 1, 2021. GPS will allow these immigrants to reside and work in the US without the fear of deportation. DHS expects the new program to benefit 75,100 Ukrainians currently living in the US. At present, 4000 Ukrainians face deportation proceedings (out of that, 3000 seek asylum).

Seven Ukrainian refugees entered the United States during the first half of March. This week, the Biden administration announced the intention of allowing more refugees to seek solace in the US. Furthermore, the plan would be to speed up the visa process for the relatives of Ukrainians (citizens and residents) living in the US.

The NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs offers additional resources for US citizens and residents seeking to invite their Ukrainian relatives. In addition, the Mayor’s office connections to free (city-funded) legal help during this time of crisis. The NYC government is setting up a warehouse to store supplies for Ukrainian refugees as New Yorkers eagerly wait to donate supplies.

The US government will allow applications for temporary status or Humanitarian Parole. It’s imperative that individuals at high risk for murder (such as activists, members of the LGBTQ community, or journalists) shelter immediately. On March 24, the Biden administration announced that it would welcome the first 100,000 Ukrainian refugees into the US. As the news changes daily and the conflict escalates, policy changes follow not far behind. As a result, we can expect frequent and impending changes in permissions and immigration law.

Indicators of hope

The pervasive flood of anxiety may soon lift for many. Truly, there is hope in our world where policy changes can seemingly happen overnight. As more officials and citizens raise concerns and advocate for the fate of Ukrainians, the government seeks resolutions for the conflict. Sanctions are increasingly exasperating Russian officials, and there are rumors of a pending revolt.

The world stands behind Ukraine, and we can be proud of doing our part to help the persecuted.

Hope, prayer and support

The Russian invasion resulted in so much more than bloodshed and an immigration influx. This conflict is a criminal attack and a fight for human rights, dignity, diversity, and freedom. This war is happening on the streets of Ukraine, at the international diplomacy level, the national policy level, and inside every single one of our hearts. So let’s do all we can to help and advocate.

Regardless of one’s position on the role of immigration in the US, basic human decency dictates that we should unite and save lives by all means necessary.

As the world cries in rage at the atrocious injustice and murder of our Ukrainian brothers, sisters, and children, the diplomats have their hands tied. While sanctions imposed are well and good, those will take months, if not over half a year, to achieve full impact. In the meantime, individuals from all over the world are crossing borders to fight against Putin’s oppression.

In Russia

Surprisingly, Putin has turned against his citizens, given that Russians themselves are suffering. The Russian people are outraged and protesting the killings and occupation. By March 7, over 4,300 Russians are in jail over antiwar protests. Over 150 journalists fled Russia from fears of rising persecution. Russians that signed antiwar petitions are getting fired from their jobs. As Russian officials spread war propaganda, the remaining mothers of young soldiers protest the invasion of Ukraine. Russian soldiers suffer from low morale, demonstrated by a lack of cohesion and discipline while fearing being greeted as murderers instead of victors back in their homeland. How else could anyone feel when being asked to attack and occupy a courageous country without provocation, murder innocent children, violate agreements of a cease-fire, and in a sense, murder, cheat and lie for gain? Putin’s resolution and aggression grow as Russian jails fill up proportionally to the Ukrainian morgues.

There is a real threat that the delayed progress and occupation resistance in Ukraine could provoke Putin to take unspeakable action. At a moment where this fiend and a bloodthirsty tyrant remains unaffected by cries of people, dying children, international outrage, or the oppression of his people screaming from jails, every bit of well-timed help is crucial. NYC rallies to help support our heroic Ukrainian brothers and sisters and their courageous leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy. So let’s join the New Yorkers that generously give and support Ukraine. Let’s remember that no gift is too big or too small to make a difference.

How can you help?

While many businesses boost morale by displaying the Ukrainian flag and symbols, some take it further. So let’s support those who are striving to make a difference.

The Gatsby

The Gatsby Social Club Mafia Club hosts Eastern-European-themed events, workshops, mafia plays, meet-ups, parties, presentations, and more. In addition, the Gatsby transformed into a humanitarian base where employees and volunteers gather supplies to ship to Ukraine. So you can swing by and donate non-perishable food items, baby formula, personal care/hygiene items, and other necessities.

Events

Numerous groups such as the Ukrainian Running Club New York, Ukrainian National Home, Razom for Ukraine, and other organizations, institutions, and churches are Increasing support rallies, marathons, and various events across NYC. For example, this week, the Ukrainian cross of gratitude arrived at the St. Patrick’s Cathedral and is available for viewing. The cross is part of a pilgrimage traveling to over 46 countries to demonstrate support for defending Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Consulate NYC

As the NYC lawmakers visited the Ukraine consulate on Friday, the Ukrainian council presented unrefutable evidence of Russia purposefully targeting civilians (residential areas, hospitals, children’s centers, and first aid help). Active rallies take place outside of the consulate.

In cooperation with IRC (the international rescue committee), the Ukrainian consulate organized a fundraiser to aid the refugee crisis in Ukraine. People can make one-time donations or establish ongoing monthly tax-deductible contributions through the consulate website or by calling 1-800-9RESCUE.

Businesses that STILL support Russia

Many notable organizations abruptly cut ties with the Russian economy. Even the artistic world of New York City was shocked to see the Metropolitan Opera dissolve ties with the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko (a long-time supporter of Putin).

However, if you wish to make sure that your hard-earned dollars don’t support a country that allows its dictator to murder, stay away from companies that still choose to profit from ongoing connections with Russia or were slow to exit the country.

  • Estee Lauder (as of March 7th, they released a statement in support of Ukraine, as well as suspending business in Russia)
  • Shell (as of March 8th, they announced their intention to withdraw from Russia oil and gas)
  • McDonald (as of March 8th, they have suspended operations in Russia)
  • PepsiCo (as of March 8th, they suspended production and sale of Pepsi-Cola and other global beverage brands in Russia)
  • Coca-Cola (as of March 8th, they suspended business in Russia)
  • Yum Brands-think KFC and Pizza Hut (released a statement of pause on investment and development in Russia and a redirection of profits to humanitarian efforts)
  • Mondelez International- think Oreos and Ritz crackers (as of March 9th they announced they scaled back non-essential activities in Russia, increased humanitarian efforts, but have not completely cut ties with Russia)
  • Starbucks (as of March 8th, they have suspended all business activity in Russia)
  • Herbalife
  • Hilton (as of March 9th, they have paused development for future hotels)
  • Kimberly-Clark– maker of Huggies and Cottonelle

Support businesses that are committed to helping Ukraine

New York City is home to one of the largest Ukrainian populations outside Ukraine. So starting the last weekend of February, governor Hochul lit up more than a dozen landmarks in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Prominent buildings such as the Empire State building display yellow and blue lights.

Streecha

Streecha Is one of the east Village Staples with homemade Ukrainian classics. In addition, the chef hosts weekly volunteer classes on how to make their signature dumplings.

Balthazar

March 8 will mark the following date, during which the owner, Keith Mcnally, will donate all proceed to UNICEF’s Protection Children in Ukraine. For more information or future dates, check out their website.

KGB bar

KGB bar joined the establishments that switched all the Russian alcohol brands to Ukrainian ones.

Veselka

This pierogi and borscht East Village Staple redesigned the famous black and white cookie in the colors of the Ukrainian flag and is donating 10% of its borscht sales to Ukraine efforts.

Archestratus Books and Foods

Archestratus holds bake sales to benefit “Cook for Ukraine” (a fundraising effort organized by neighborhood chefs).

The Ukrainian Museum in the East Village

Explore the rich Ukrainian history at one of the country’s largest Ukrainian museums.

Golden Leo

Golden Leo offers dinner and dancing in the lively Brooklyn setting. Complete with all-night Ukrainian music, this locale provides more than entertainment. Gold and Leo created an Amazon list that patrons can order from directly. You will find medical supplies and other necessities shipped directly to Ukraine on the list.

Rondel

Rondell is a traditional Ukrainian restaurant with live music and Ukrainian classics. Similar to the Golden Leo, Rondel is using the same Amazon list.

Wow Boquet (online)

These gorgeous and edible bouquets are reminiscent of a tropical vacation. Complete with dragon fruit, mangoes, orchids, and other astonishing features, Wow Bouquet is owned and operated by Ukrainians who pledged 10% of their sales to help families in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Institute of America

Situated in the former Fletcher-Sinclair mansion on the Upper Eastside, the UIA nonprofit promotes Ukrainian art, music, children’s programs, film screenings, and literature.

Dacha 1946

This restaurant is hosting “Cook for Ukraine” events and fundraisers.

Inked NYC

This tattoo parlor is hosting “raffles for tattoo time” to raise money for refugees.

Support the Ukrainian journalists

Besides donating to reputable international organizations that currently support Ukraine refugee displacement, you can consider direct impact. Due to compromised infrastructure and war-zone risks, the news flowing out of Ukraine is severely compromised. The Kyiv Independent is accepting donations to help journalistic efforts. They have set up the gofundme and the Patreon pages.

Big Apple and an even bigger heart

With each day, the opportunities to donate and support are growing incrementally. Wars bring out the worst in people, but they also bring out the best. So let’s help New York tip the scales in favor of Ukraine, its brave people, suffering children, and their courageous president. We all know that the Big Apple has an even bigger heart. Let’s show it!

A Former Shen Yun Musician Takes You Inside Her Nightmare Experience

A Note From The Editor: A previous version of this article contained inaccurate facts regarding the history of Falun Gong. To highlight transparency, this piece has been edited to only reflect the lived experience of the author, the views and opinions here do not necessarily reflect the views of CitySignal.

On March 10, 2022, the Shen Yun Performing Arts ensemble will start its first-week performance at 7 PM. Running until March 20 at the David H. Koch Theater in New York City, Shen Yun is coming to town once more to delight its audiences. The tickets range from $162-210. The performance is truly a spectacle with beautiful costumes and gliding dancers.

Insider musician’s story

When I first arrived for my audition, I was in awe of the beauty of the 427-acre compound in Cudlebackville/Deerpark, New York (about two hours from New York City). However, as much as I admired the beauty of the poor, caged peacocks inside the park, I could not help feeling alarmed by a lack of connection to the outside world. Even though I was there with an invitation, the armed guards at the gate waited until someone arrived to pick me up. So I had to leave my car by the gate and wait for my host. As we drove about a mile down the path, I marveled at the magnificent reproductions of Asian temples, a lake, the main concert halls, and residences. Inside the compound, you can find everything/everyone necessary for survival: lawyers, accountants, chefs, tailors, musical instrument repair, store, practice rooms, meditation rooms, concert hall, masons/builders, mailroom, movie theater, parking, and armed guards. At first, I was impressed, as I loved meditating, so this seemed like pure heaven and a beautiful place to be. Furthermore, my salary was in the mid-40s, which I considered a passable stepping-stone because I was still finishing my degree.

Rules and Regulations (spoken and unspoken)

About a month into my residence, heaven started turning to hell.
After familiarizing myself with the basic Falun Gong concepts, I could not believe how far away those were from truth, benevolence, or forbearance (alleged principles of Falun Gong). One would expect an organization that stands up for human rights not to discriminate. Both the book (and in practice), the spiritual movement is strongly prejudiced.

  • anti-atheist,
  • anti-evolution,
  • anti-gay/lesbian (Li’s manual calls homosexuality a “depraved thing” on page 2)
  • sexist,
  • racist (the manager informed me that his skin got proportionally lighter the more he meditated, and there was not a single African-American person on-site despite hundreds of musicians),
  • and judgemental.

Cult-like elements designed to control members’ lives were prominent throughout the practice.

  • Members were segregated by art disciplines to prevent co-mingling.
  • Visiting or inviting families into the workplace was discouraged.
  • The organization (unofficially) prompted members to marry and socialize exclusively within the movement (leaving town to visit significant others is frowned upon).
  • Members were encouraged to live in dwellings provided by other members or in the close vicinity of the work compound (renting a private apartment and independent living was discouraged).
  • Members were highly discouraged from outside entertainment, dining, and drinking,
  • Pictures inside the compound are not allowed.
  • Medical assistance outside of meditation was discouraged.
  • Personal documents such as passports were initially confiscated for visa purposes and kept with the company.
  • In addition, members must socialize within their sex (eating in the cafeteria is segregated by males/females, and social interaction is minimal).
  • Members felt pressure to meditate in groups, so that time spent meditating is supervised.
  • Communal meditation times must be preserved.
  • Greeting Li Hongzhi or his wife must be done with reverence and bowing (followers must call him “Master”).
  • The only reading encouraged is Lee Hongzhi’s book which contains spiritual, moral, and prescriptive dogma.
  • A prominent belief that “the master” knows your darkest thoughts and actions.

Even artistic creativity and freedom seemed absent as pieces composed by Lee Hongzhi (a former trumpet player with a short-lived career at a forest police unit in Jilin Province, China) took center stage. Those were said to contain inherent spiritually enlightening characteristics. However, many professionally trained musicians will agree that those are rather simplistic and repetitive musical structures. The entertainment value of Shen Yun’s performances is mainly in the visual, drama, costumes, and dancing.

Not a religion (spiritual method/discipline)

The practitioners are adamant in refusing to proclaim Falun Gong as a religion. The meditation, spiritual practices, and reading the book are said to

  • promote one’s road onto enlightenment,
  • decrease attachment to earthly desires,
  • increase peace,
  • improve health/cure diseases (in fact, there are claims of Falun Gong members being persecuted/killed to confiscate their healthy organs),
  • improve youth and overall appearance, and
  • lighten the skin tone.

My increasingly contentious relationship with the manager (exacerbated by me constantly leaving the compound, joining an outside gym, chatting with males and females alike, and having a boyfriend outside of Falun Gong) culminated around the time of my introduction to Li Hongzhi. He seemed aloof and stood there smiling, much like the pope in public celebrations (the pope generally looks more friendly). Since I was the only one who did not bow before him, I immediately stuck out due to my lack of reverence. Around that time, I started skipping all the extracurricular/fun activities such as movie nights and the like. Instead, after work, I would join fellow musicians in a restaurant and have dinner with a couple of glasses of wine. Following one of our excursions, a friend alerted me to spying/monitoring as she was given a speech about drinking and going out. My uneasiness increased since I started seeing cars following me whenever I would leave the compound.

Escape

Finally, one Friday, after the rehearsals were over, I packed a bag to visit my boyfriend. About 20 minutes into my drive, I got a phone call from my manager asking where I was. Imagine my alarm and shock to think someone was keeping tabs on me. After a short conversation explaining my misfit as a valuable community member, the manager informed me that I would be fired. As I pulled out of the parking lot where I stopped to take the call, I was vaguely aware of a car behind me. Perhaps it was paranoia, but regardless, I drove straight home, packed up my most important things, grabbed my cat, and informed the landlord that I would be back for my things later on in the week. As I was packing up, my landlord told me that she was sorry to see me leave and that I should be careful because there were strange cars passing back-and-forth and stopping on our small (dead-end) street.

As I drove away, I received another phone call from the manager asking me where I was going. I informed the manager that I was leaving since I was no longer in their employ and my activities should not concern them. About a week later, I came back with my boyfriend to grab the rest of my things. I had made arrangements to retrieve my passport from a fellow musician (to avoid going inside the compound again). My friend was an earnest believer of Falun Gong and informed me that since my previous job was not a great fit, perhaps I would be interested in teaching instead. She told me that the organization had room in their schools with a higher salary, and then maybe eventually, I would want to start playing again. I could not even bring myself to consider the option.

Falun Gong: Cult or a helpful institution?

While I was there, I met international musicians sponsored for a visa that worked for a mere fraction of what I made. Most of them lived in one-room dwellings that they rented from fellow Falun Gong practitioners. Many members donated their services, worked for free (simply for food and lodging), and many even allocated funds in their wills. As a result, Li Hongzhi’s residence is nothing short of luxurious and constantly expanding with new construction. He has amassed land in multiple locations, and this nonprofit that seeks to raise awareness of the Chinese government’s atrocities through art has become quite a lucrative venture.

Li Hongzhi denies to acknowledge Falun Gong as a cult. “Falun Gong does not have temples, churches, baptism, all kinds of religious formalities,” he says. “People will go out to do the exercises every morning for half an hour or one hour and go back to work. That’s why I say it is not a cult.” Unfortunately, that is an incomplete truth. I witnessed meditation requirements multiple times daily, beautiful temples, seclusion from family/friends, and behavioral requirements with tremendous peer pressure to belong (and keep your job).  In addition, widespread accusations of withheld medical care, endangerment, and death are linked to the Falun Gong practice. While Li Hongzhi denies such allegations, I witnessed his staff discouraging employees from obtaining (work-sponsored) medical insurance as evidence of a lack of faith in the healing powers of  Falun Gong.

Perhaps I have had an anti-authority streak since I was a child and am simply overly sensitive. On the other hand, my experience is hardly unique since many have plotted to leave for months/years. Falun Gong alarmingly finds its place on international cult awareness sites. After all, many members praise “Master Li,” displaying his images on mini alters at home and the compound. So perhaps the Falun Gong compound is a cult or an institution that only serves the devoted. Or perhaps, I was simply unenlightened and lacked humility. As an arts patron, it’s up to you whom you will support. Judge for yourself.

We pay tribute to those individuals and groups who, through their actions, remind us that we are all one

From selfless individuals to large foundations, NYC is filled with philanthropy-minded people who contribute to the entire development of the city through their giving hearts. As we bustle around from home to work and curse at getting stuck in traffic, we can only wonder how these dynamic individuals find the time, budget, and heart space to care for those who need it most. Through their philanthropic efforts, we all enjoy public services, parks, education, and art. With the pandemic hitting NYC hard, we all need something that warms our hearts and unites us.

Gifts and Charities in NYC

Little Island

The Little Island is located at Pier 55 in Manhattan and is an artificially constructed Island Park on the brink of the Hudson River. Designed by the Heatherwick Studio, it is the newest addition to New York City’s landscape.

Encompassing 2.4 acres, the Little Island stands on 132 part-shaped structures suspended above the water on concrete pilings, extending deep into the river. The effect is of a suspended, mid-air floating island. Under the architect Signe Nielsen’s supervision, the park boasts beautifully sculpted lawns, paths, flora, a stage, and an amphitheater. Funded through the generosity of Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg, this natural work of art will serve New Yorkers for years to come.

Big Apple Greeter

The Big Apple Greeters are an organization of charitable volunteers who support New York City with devotion, pride, and respect. Big Apple Greeters are friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable about each NYC neighborhood they represent to visitors. The Big Apple Greeters are a New York City service that encourages cross-participation between volunteers, nonprofits, AmeriCorps, and businesses. This New York City service takes ownership and responsibility of the city, and its residents, by encouraging youth mentoring and leadership.

New York Community Trust, Lorie Slutsky

With President Lorie Slutsky at the helm (retiring in 2022), the New York Community Trust helps protect the environment and elderly New Yorkers, improves education/ the arts, and fights for justice. Additionally, the foundation ensures a lasting legacy by overseeing charitable gifts and connects future philanthropists with existing nonprofits working to make a difference.

As you explore Brooklyn in all of its’ historic glory, consider paying homage to the romantic atmosphere and celebrating Valentine’s Day in the borough. Brooklyn offers a unique charm to everyone, locals and tourists alike, with numerous iconic restaurants and entertainment offerings.

So before you make those reservations, weigh your options carefully. Valentine’s day only rolls around once a year. As a result, you want your romantic plan to go off without a hitch. What does your charming date enjoy? The type of food, ambiance, drinks, or entertainment can make or break a date, so consider your options carefully. Most restaurants offer Valentine’s Day specials, events, or fixed-price menus, so inquire ahead of time.

The only question left to answer is, did you schedule an appointment for your haircut?

First Date Spots Brooklyn

Westlight

A post shared by Westlight (@westlightnyc)

Consider Westlight for cocktails, snacks, and panoramic views of the New York City skyline. Westlight, a staple of Williamsburg, offers stunning views and a sensual, dimly-lit ambiance. The romantic and contemporary decorations, suspended lighting, and glass interior creates a feeling of relaxation and luxury. In addition, Westlight offers a 23rd-floor rooftop ice rink for your Valentine’s Day pleasure if you are the outdoorsy type.

Their famous cocktails include the Knaughty or Knot, The Four Winds, and The Camelot. If you feel snacky, you must try the charred octopus skewers or the Korean chili-glaze short rib. Westlight is an outstanding choice for a first date. It’s a great place for an intimate conversation, where you can feel on top of the world (in good company) and be on top of the world.

Kimoto Rooftop Garden Lounge

Suppose it’s early in the afternoon and you are in the mood for sushi or cocktails. Then you should head over to the Kimoto Rooftop Restaurant and Garden Lounge. Truly inspired by a garden, this chic rooftop lounge offers Asian-fusion cuisine cocktails, unique Asian craft beers, bottle service, and incredible city views. The name Kimoto means “one who lives beneath the trees. ” The ambiance is urban and minimalist. Kimoto is a great place to relax, enjoy conversation, and take in all that Brooklyn offers, whether during the day or at dusk observing the sunset.

Kimoto serves a brunch menu special, with $30 unlimited mimosas for two hours. The chicken N’ waffles, with soy-marinated buttermilk chicken, is an Asian-inspired spin-off of the classic southern staple. While the cocktail menu is on the sweet side,  you can ask the bartender for whatever you want. They will make it!

If you have drinks and wish to snack, you must try the lobster fried rice for dinner accompanied by whichever small plates/sushi strikes your fancy. Given the popularity of this venue, you should make your reservations well in advance.

Michael’s

Michael’s is an upscale Italian restaurant and a historical staple of Brooklyn, serving customers since 1964 through three generations. The ambiance is warm, elegant, and romantic. Michael’s features daily specials as well as an extended menu. The wine by the glass list, although small, has many drinkable offerings, and we recommend the Gaja “Promis” Super Tuscan.

Try the Zuppa do Clams or Michael’s seafood hot antipasto for an appetizer. Next, order the grilled octopus, roasted bone marrow, escargot, or lobster bisque if available on a particular day. Consider sharing the seafood risotto while you wait for your main entrée to arrive. Outstanding entrées include Michael’s lobster with shrimp, Chilean sea bass with fennel/Cipollini/cherry tomatoes and rosemary, Australian rack of lamb with roasted garlic/rosemary/fava bean purée, and Ossobucco. For dessert consider the classic tiramisu or crème brûlée. The Italian family-recipe classics are also outstanding. If at the end of the evening, you fall in love (with the sauce), you can always take their bottled Arrabbiata with you.

St. Mazie Bar & Supper Club

A post shared by St. Mazie (@stmazie)

St. Mazie is a quaint bar with daily, live jazz music, a garden, and a downstairs restaurant area. Check out their schedule for daily music offerings. The jazz bands range from legendary to up-and-coming, with typically a local following, like Jazz with Asher Ben-Or, Alex Simon’s Gypsy Jazz, Kings County Swing, and The Aaron Johnson Jazz Quarter.

The main floor area is where you can listen to music and enjoy the cocktail/bar menu. Then, you may choose to head downstairs to the supper club, where you can enjoy upscale, comfort food. While St. Mazie’s is entertaining and charming, we recommend it for the atmosphere and quality of music, not just as a destination restaurant. Consider timing your visit around the shows.

St. Mazie holds a happy hour from 5 to 7 PM with house wine, beer, oysters, and champagne specials. The jazz brunch takes place on Sundays, between 1 and 3 PM.

House of Yes

A post shared by House of Yes (@houseofyesnyc)

Suppose you’re feeling a bit risque. Then head over to the House of Yes and check out the burlesque shows. House of Yes is a former warehouse that features dance, circus, theater, and cabaret performances. Featuring interactive performances where patrons can dance and drink, House of Yes features the offbeat, the unusual, and the whimsical. The venue describes itself as a “creative collective with a performance-infused nightclub” and has been proud to host creative cultures and outrageous dance parties since 2015. The performance objective is to defy categorization and transcend genres. At the vanguard of the nightlife culture, the House of Yes fosters self-expression, creativity, and experimentation of emerging artists.

While tickets are available on a first-come-first-serve basis, the demand is high, so get there early. You can also purchase your tickets in advance to avoid waiting. The weekend parties are themed, and guests are encouraged to dress up in costumes. Are you feeling creative? You cannot find a better evening for a crazy and fun night out.

As you enjoy your evening and everything that Brooklyn offers, remember that this is only a sample of what the borough has to offer. Brooklyn is full of nightlife, culinary gems, history, and pride. So, invite your valentine for a magnificent date night in this charming and magical New York City borough.

As you make your last-minute celebration plans, you stop to think, “What signature and unique experiences does Staten Island have to offer?” You don’t want to blend in with the crowd, you want to stand out! So where can you go to impress, especially if it’s the first date? Since you cannot pack too many activities into one date, we designed five unforgettable experiences for you and your sexy date to enjoy. You’re welcome.

All you have to do is make the reservations, arrange the transportation, compliment your partner, and smile. Oh yes, and somebody has to pay the bill. Not too hard, right? We know you can turn on that incredible charm anytime you want to!

Where will your Valentine’s day adventure take you?

The Flagship Brewing Company

Before your evening truly begins, why not explore the best brewing company Staten Island has to offer? The Flagship Brewing Company in the North Shore area lets you explore the crafts. Craft beer, that is! Since 2014, This brewery has offered a tasting room experience with fifteen beers on tap. The Flagship brewery has something for everyone. You can take a tour and even purchase merchandise such as matching sweatshirts! A tour is a great way to learn about the art of craft beer production, processes, and ingredients. Then, as you settle down by the bar, and put on your matching Flagship sweatshirts, order a flight or ask to try a couple of beers. If you are not sure which flavor profile you like, a flight is a great way to explore the world of hops! If you fall in love, you can purchase kegs to go and even sign up for the newsletter to keep track of new releases. Visiting a fun brewery is such an adorable way to celebrate Valentine’s Day!

Check out their events page or sign up for updates to receive notifications on the latest happenings.

St. George Theater

This majestic and gorgeous theater is located in the very center of Staten Island, next to 350 Richmond Terrace, and houses performance arts, Picture Palace, and an office complex. Attributed to the famous architect Eugene de Rosa, this 2,800-seat structure opened its doors in 1929. Nestor Castro designed the heavily ornamented interior reminiscent of a melange of Spanish/Italian Baroque influences. Since 1978 there have been multiple attempts at revival. Briefly, St. George theater served as a dinner theater, nightclub, and antique showroom, but the revival attempts were unsuccessful. Finally, in 2004 a nonprofit took over. The theater revived, showcasing over 400 events until it closed doors for a $5.2 million restoration project in 2017.

The now-restored gem is worth the visit. The Saint George theater hosts educational programs, architectural tours, concerts, comedies, theater companies, and children’s shows. However, be careful using the bathrooms. According to the radio host, Ken Dashow, and his wife (an actress), the lady left to visit the powder room backstage during one of the rehearsals. As she tried to leave, the door locked. Upon hearing sounds, she pleaded with her captor to let her out. Finally, someone giggled and opened the door, but no one was there.

Check out the showtimes and events at this historic gem worthy of the most romantic date.

Angelina’s Restaurant

This beautiful, waterside multi-level restaurant is reminiscent of a bygone era’s elegant, classy Italian mansion. This is perhaps the most romantic restaurant on Staten Island and a great place to watch the sunsets and skyline. The Bubble Specials Brunch would make a great pre-Valentine’s day date. Angelina’s features a bar/lounge and a restaurant area that allows patrons to relax in an unforgettable atmosphere.

The appetizer menu has amazing club crab cakes with shrimp, heirloom tomatoes, onions, avocado, lemon, and evoo. Other items of interest include mixed cold seafood salad, carpaccio, and tuna tartare. The pasta menu features Zuppa Di Pesce and (our personal favorite) squid ink pasta with shrimp, clams, mussels, and scallops in an Italian plum tomato sauce. For the main entrée, you might consider the pistachio-crusted, wild Chilean Sea Bass with limoncello and caper berries, the Osso Bucco, or the rack of lamb (pistachio encrusted, Oreganati, or grilled in Port wine reduction).

Fushimi

Are you in the mood for sushi? This upscale Japanese/French fusion is likely to quench your appetite. Fushimi is the perfect mix of luxury, romanticism, and elegance. The atmosphere is more reminiscent of a lounge rather than a restaurant. So please sit back, relax and order a cocktail. Try one of their signature drinks, such as a spin on a Mojito or The Rockaway Beach. The menu includes an assortment of sake, champagne, wine, and other drinks. For wine lovers, consider a bottle of the Stag Leap Cabernet.

The appetizers you must try include the scallop truffle canapés, short rib, and the sashimi pizza. Go ahead, try the Sex on the Beach and Out of Control rolls (no pun intended). If you have room for dessert, indulge in watching as the warm chocolate oozes out of your lava cake.

Amendment 18 Speakeasy Bar and Grill

Amendment 18 is located inside the historic Edgewater Hall. Since 1876 this venue has served as a Vaudeville theater and entertainment locale. As a result, this speakeasy retains every bit of 19th-century character and history and will transport you back to the prohibition era. Amendment 18 hosted music, theater, and movie legends in its glorious past.

The 1920s inspired the design, menu, and drinks of this speakeasy. The beer list features local, as well as proprietary, craft beers. If you’re considering a cocktail, rumor has it that The Perfect Storm is famous all over Staten Island. The heavy stone and brick and to the mystique, reminiscent of a European cellar. Currently, Amendment 18 hosts music, shows, and special events. Check out their upcoming calendar for more information.

We hope that you enjoy your date night…hopefully you’ll enjoy it well into the following day. We wish you and your date a very special, sensual, and happy Valentine’s Day with many more to come.

With Valentine’s day around the corner, plan your evening with a Flare, Flamenco, and Flamboyance

You are excited, running around, and getting ready. Although typically a fashionista, picking the best wardrobe ensemble presents a challenge today. You double-check the deodorant situation and glance in the mirror. “Darn, I look good,” you think and grin. Your reflection confirms with approval. Finally, you relax because your natural charm, wit, and a COVID vaccination card will take care of the rest. You have the whole night planned out.

First Date Spots Manhattan

Russian and Turkish Baths

Pre-date experience, proof of vaccine required

Enter if you dare! Baths may be an eyebrow-raising idea on a first date (or the second, for that matter); however, if you are an adventurous spirit (or wish to pamper yourself before the big evening is in full swing), head over to the Russian and Turkish baths on 10th street, right by the Steiner Building. This historic bathhouse opened its doors in 1892 and has been a piece of New York City’s history ever since. If you choose to make your outing into a brunch occasion, the on-site restaurant serves all-day breakfast, lunch, snacks, beer, and wine. The Russian Borscht soup, as well as the herring, are a treat. Whether you choose a massage, dead sea salt scrub, or the more adventurous Oaken leaf Platza (plain language translation: a beatdown with a broom meant to open your pores), you will feel rejuvenated and ready to start your date.

Guggenheim

The beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright building has been home to the Guggenheim contemporary museum since 1959. Given the spiral shape of the building, you can take the elevators up and visit the exhibits as you come down. The museum is home to a permanent (and growing) collection of contemporary, modern, post-impressionist, and impressionist art. In addition to the permanent collection, the Guggenheim houses three to four visiting exhibits at a time (painting, sculpture, photography, drawings, and installations) and is right by The Capitol building. The experience is unique and quite magnificent for a date. With the constantly revolving exhibitions, consult the website for more information.

Bibi Wine Bar

Where happy hour is every day

A post shared by Pris McKenzie (@bibiwinebar)

The Bibi Wine Bar is reminiscent of a traditional French wine bar, covered in wood, with tall ceilings and large windows. A window seat provides endless entertainment and allows you, and your charming date, the freedom to gossip about the bar staff, patrons, and people passing by. An extensive wine list faithfully represents wines from varied countries/regions. Daily happy hour runs from opening until 8 pm, which makes Bibi the perfect haunt for a pre-dinner drink. Specials include selected bottles of wine ($28), glasses ($8), and beer/cider ($5). For those feeling peckish, the charcuterie and cheese plates are available in pairs of two ($10), four ($19), and six ($27). Personal recommendations include Prosciutto di Parma, Drunken Goat Cheese, Saint-Andre, with olives added to the mix. Pick your poison! If you like white wine, the Supernatural Sauvignon Blanc and the Vinho Verde (green wine), Alianca are great choices. Suppose red strikes your fancy Pinot Noir, V.D. Buxey Mercurey, or Cabernet Rayun should hit the spot. If you cannot make up your mind, go for the Garnacha Blanca Bodegas Bhilar (orange). What if you and your date are like-minded? That is an excellent start to a relationship! Go for the bottle and share the experience (1881 Napa Cabernet or Nebbiolo, Ferdinando Barolo). After all, with everything that you already have in common, who wouldn’t share?

Nai Tapas Restaurant

Live Flamenco

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Nai (@naitapas)

In addition to an exploratory dining experience, on Thursdays and Saturday evenings, you can enjoy a live Flamenco show while you eat (7:30-9:30, call ahead to verify). Make sure to reserve a table, ideally on the second floor, before arrival. The atmosphere crosses between a rustic Spanish restaurant and an NYC dining scene with lights streaming in from the prominent corner widow. The effect is perfect for a date. Take your time and order some tapas (small plates) to share. Are you feeling adventurous? Perhaps the flamenco crew will be looking for student volunteers?

Seafood lovers will enjoy pulpo (octopus), calamari, mejillones (mussels), and sea bass. The cauliflower is outstanding for sharing. Carnivores must try the katsu (ribeye), lomo (pork loin), and churrasco (skirt steak). If you stay for dessert, the brule and chocolate mousse are notable. Wash it all down with adventurous sangria flavors or the house wine.

The Standard Hotel, High Line

A post shared by pɹɐpuɐʇs ǝɥʇ (@thestandard)

The Standard Hotel (check out Valentine’s day special events) houses six establishments known for their hospitality, glitz, and glamor. Given the frigid February weather, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if you and your sexy Valentine would rather stay warm and cozy at one location without sticking your noses outside. Just a few blocks from the Hudson Lofts Condo, you can pamper yourselves, find brunch, pre-dinner drinks, entertainment, music, Biergarten, post-dinner drinks, and a sexy cabaret show all in one place. Relax your sweetie with a massage, acupuncture, and sound therapy. Enjoy a price-fix feast at the Standard Grill, or a la carte items at the Grill Café, like shrimp with lemon and nori, jamon Iberico De Bellota, bluefin tuna Crudo, beef tartare, aged NY Strip, lobster, poussin, spatchcock, whole young chicken, all served with Perigourdine sauce, pomme purée and wild mushrooms. Finish your dinner with the chocolate bombe sweetheart dessert for two. If you can still move afterward, explore the Standard’s Valentine’s day events, raves, cabaret, jazz, and parties.

The Slipper Room

Are you ready for a luxurious, sensual experience to crown your evening? First, imagine walking into a sultry lounge, complete with red curtains and an atmosphere reminiscent of an old-world bordello. Then, on the stage in front of you is where the magic happens. Theater, dancing, burlesque, comedy, circus, and aerial performers delight your senses and wit as you sip your cocktails (New Fangled-a version of Old Fashioned).

Tickets must be reserved online ahead of time, although a limited number of passes are available at the door before each show. Additionally, if you want to snag a seat, get there early. You must show proof of at least one vaccination before entering the building.

***

As you pile into a cab, ask yourself. How was this for a night out? Did you have fun? Are you crazy about each other? Are you looking into each other’s eyes and asking, “Your place or mine?”

The rest is up to you. How will you finish this story?

The Bronx is notably most famous for housing America’s largest zoo and Yankee stadium. The stadium area is peppered with famous local bars that pay homage to NYC’s baseball legacy. While you won’t be visiting outside venues in this weather, such as the notoriously famous Skyline Drive-in/Walk-in Movie Theater that offers stunning views of NYC and the East River, there are plenty of diverse options to impress your date.

Where will you take your date this Valentine’s Day?

As the pandemic maintains a stronghold, some of the best venues are temporarily closed, such as the Showman’s Jazz Club and Gin Fizz. But have no fear. Short of picking up your gifts, candy, or flowers, we did our best to find you amazing borough entertainment.

So gentlemen, grab that dinner jacket (you know, the one that makes you look in better shape than Cristiano Ronaldo) and take a final, self-appreciative look in the mirror before heading out. Ladies, you can take a bit longer. After all, we know it takes effort to look this good, and no one could think for a minute that you rolled out of bed looking this gorgeous!

First Date Spots The Bronx

Bronx Museum of the Arts

The Bronx Museum of the Arts is the former home of the Young Israel of the Concourse synagogue, donated by the city. The museum focuses on contemporary art and the borough’s diverse cultures. The permanent collection consists of over 2000 Asian, Latin American, and African-American artworks and depicts political and social themes.

During the 19th century, the Bronx saw an influx of immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Eastern Europe. By the 20th century, the immigration demographics changed to include countries from the Caribbean region such as Puerto Rico, Haiti, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, and African-Americans migrating from the southern states, all of whom are represented in the museum.

The Bronx saw a deep decline in population from the 1960s until the 1990s, resulting in urban decay. Since the 1990s, the Bronx revitalization plan has been underway. In 1997 the Bronx was designated an all-American city by the national civic league acknowledging the improvements. What better way to honor such achievement than by visiting this celebrated location with a hot date?

Admission to the museum is free.

La Casa Grande Cigars

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by La Casa Grande Cigars (@lcgcigars)

For Valentine’s Day, consider a pre-dinner event at La Casa Grande Cigars, open from 6 to 9 PM. A couple’s Admission ticket costs $100 (single $65) and includes a bottle of wine, unlimited sushi, and two cigars. The event features a cash bar and cigar rolling classes. Before the event, consider taking a class to learn about cigar shine, veins, texture, dust versus mold, and flavor profiles. You will also learn how to light/cut/store a cigar and, most importantly, how to smoke a cigar. You can even purchase one of their signature baskets to take home. Experienced artisans roll the cigars at the Bronx Arthur Avenue Retail Market. This quaint, timeless, historical market is worth exploring by itself. As you browse, keep in mind that the darker the cigar, the more robust the smoke flavor. The thicker cigars tend to have more complex flavors since they feature blends from different tobacco types. Our final tip? Resist the temptation of biting off the end of your cigar and invest in a quality, double-blade cutter and cedar matches.

Jake’s Steakhouse

Jake’s Steakhouse offers a casual, clubby, sophisticated vibe, multi-level space, and Van Cortlandt Park’s gorgeous views. As you arrive, consider using the valet as parking can be difficult. Inside, the atmosphere is warm, industrial, and spacious, with suspended lighting and a wooden bar. Giant upstairs windows proudly display a gorgeous view of the park. If you prefer a casual experience, the bar area offers a TV with sports.

The menu features a raw bar. Notable appetizers include Mussels Fra Diavolo, Nueske’s thick-cut applewood smoked bacon, tuna tartare tower, and crabcakes. If you’re not in the mood for a steak (why you wouldn’t be in a place like this is beyond me), consider Zuppa di Pesce, seared salmon with shiitake mushrooms/Dijon white wine sauce, or Jake’s famous baby back ribs. At Jake’s, the king of the meal is the steak. I wholeheartedly recommend the 35-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye and the Colorado rack of lamb.

Tin Marin

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tin Marín (@tin.marin.nyc)

This Latin American tapas restaurant and bar feature small/shareable bites, wine, creative cocktails (great mojitos), and live entertainment. The vibe is festive, industrial-chic with wood paneling, tall ceilings, and a backlit bar.

The notable items on the menu include Caldo Gallego, shrimp Mofonguito, grilled octopus, Suquet, lamb chops with truffle/chili/ancho mashed yuca red wine reduction, pulpo ceviche, tostones Iberico, and almejas. As your entrée, try the seafood paella, with extra virgin olive oil on the side, or filet mignon. For dessert, share the Crema Catalana and ask the chef to caramelize the custard just a bit more than usual.

With the owner, Julio, on-site and carefully monitoring the establishment, the locals rave about the menu and the food. Julio’s mother is the chef and pours her motherly love and care into every dish.

An Beal Bocht Cafe

An Beal Bocht Cafe (the “poor mouth” in Gaelic) is a music, theater, comedy, poetry venue and an Irish pub all rolled into one. The name was inspired by a famous Irish novel by Flann O’Brien, depicting life and poverty in Ireland.

The friendly staff serves Irish classics such as bangers and mash and beef shepherd’s pie. If you arrive early for brunch, try the traditional Irish breakfast with black pudding, Irish bacon on the side, and enjoy a complimentary jalapeño-infused Bloody Mary. In partnership with the Poor Mouth Theater, An Beal Bocht Café presents music and events. Since 1991 this Irish pub fostered an inclusive atmosphere for artists/performers and became a local favorite. Since then, the café has expanded into an art gallery and a small theater space. Consult their website calendar for more information.

We raise a glass of bubbly to your success. As you head back home happy and fulfilled, who knows what else that evening promises. We wish you and your love a Happy Valentine’s Day 2022!

Queens is the most diverse borough in all of New York City. These dynamics foster cultural diversity and artistic/culinary creativity.

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, we pay homage to all lovers, past and present alike, and celebrate with you. The famous “Latin Lover,” dancer and actor Rudolph Valentino, frequented the former Astor Room in Queens, next to the Kaufman Astoria Studios, formerly known as the Paramount Studios. His treat of choice became oysters and martinis. During the 1920s, his reputation as a ladies’ man came second to none. So it came to be that thousands of hysterical women roamed the streets at his funeral.

Let’s take a lesson from this Queen’s “Latin Lover” (and all other lovers) and look for great martinis, champagne, and oysters.

The Museum of Modern Art PS1 is located in Long Island City. In 1971, the museum started a collective effort to turn around abandoned and unused buildings. The end goal in mind was to turn the unused spaces into artist studios and exhibition areas.

MoMA’s PS1 mission is “to promote the enjoyment, appreciation, study, and understanding of contemporary art to a wide and growing audience.” The museum focuses on experimental, thought-provoking, diverse, and innovative art. MoMA features artists and exhibitions, the young architect’s program, music series, sculpture, long-term installations, and media art. In addition, the building houses a restaurant and a bookstore for your snacking and shopping pleasure. Mina’s Cafe, under the direction of chef Mina Stone, author of Cooking for Artists, serves Mediterranean/Greek cuisine paired with Devoción coffee, natural wines, craft beers, and Greek-inspired cocktails.

2. Addictive Wine and Tapas Bar

Sometimes the best way to start a date is with a glass, or bottle, of wine. Addictive Wine and Tapas Bar is one of three businesses owned by the sommelier, Francisco B. Diaz. Francisco is also a chef and an interior designer. His skills become apparent when one walks into Addictive Wine and Tapas Bar. His artistic approach is visible in all the details from the wine glasses, branding, decoration, and the menu.

The atmosphere is cozy and romantic with contemporary wooden paneling, electric fireplaces, and a barrel-theme reference. The effect is simultaneously rustic and modern. Wine-glass chandeliers and a beautifully organized, wooden-panel bar add elegance.

Check out their website for happy hour information, special events, paella night, and more. In addition, brunch is served on Sundays from noon until 4 PM (if you start celebrating your date early).

Needless to say, we love the wine selection. Addictive Wine and Tapas Bar offers wines by the glass, flights, or bottles. The Aviary Cabernet is worth a special mention, while the Sin Palabras (Albariño), and the Laurent Perrier champagne is perfect for Valentine’s day.

Maiella’s contemporary Italian restaurant is an excellent setting for a date night. This waterside establishment fuses casual elegance with effortless style. Located on a picturesque waterfront, Maiella also boasts vast city views. The rustic interior space, designed by the architect firm Bluarch, accommodates 180 patrons.

The must-try creations of the executive chef Giuseppe Agustino include Hamachi Crudo, charred octopus, and Wagyu tartare with black truffle and vinaigrette/parsnip crisps. From the primi menu, try the handmade pasta Cavatelli Sardo or the Strozzapreti ai Rico di Mare (urchin butter, red crab, Calabrese chili, squid ink breadcrumb). For the main course, consider the Long Island duck breast (with parsnips, cherry port mustard, spinach, and foie gras) and the Bistecca di Manzo (with artichokes and Wagyu beef salami vinaigrette).

Especially for Valentine’s Day, Maiella will offer extended hours and a three-course price fix menu at $85 per guest.

5. Doha Bar and Lounge

Doha is a lounge, dance club, and disco in Long Island City’s fantastic and accessible location. The vibe is chill, spacious, and dynamic, with fluorescent lights and spotlights adding to the festive atmosphere. Dance to the latest top 40, or sit back and watch the diverse and beautiful crowd of party-goers. As one of the best clubs in Queens, it’s vibrant with nightlife, music, and culture. In addition, Doha hosts events, concerts, parties, bachelorette parties, and festivals.

If you enjoy cocktails, this is the place to be. Many regulars swear by the incredibly strong drinks, great music, and superb/friendly atmosphere. To avoid getting inebriated, you can check out the food menu for a snack.

If you require a table or come in a larger group, please inquire, as reservations are highly recommended to avoid waiting in line. Also, make sure to check out the bottle service packages and any special events on their website.

This Valentine’s Day, we are grateful to celebrate our neighborhood’s diversity, culture, and people. Particularly during a pandemic, it’s vital to maintain courteous connections with fellow New Yorkers. Getting through present-day challenges and having the privilege to celebrate love, birthdays and other special occasions makes us remember just how special all those who make it possible are. So wish your waitress or bartender a wonderful Valentine’s Day, leave a great tip (not only a kind word), and a bar of chocolate. Remember, people may forget much, but they will never forget how you made them feel.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Queens.
